Introduction to Journalism and Media Studies
Course description
This course provides the foundational intellectual framework for all subsequent study at the institute. Students survey the history of journalism from its earliest forms through to the age of digital and social media, with particular attention to the development of the Nigerian press. The role of the media in democracy, development, and national life is examined as a central theme.
Course contents
Concept of journalism and journalism creed. Mass media and the features of mass communication. Different types of mass media and their interrelationship. Functions of mass media. Various models of mass communication. The role and contributions of technology to the development of journalism and mass communication. The origins and evolution of journalism worldwide; History of the Nigerian press; Media and democratic governance in Nigeria; The digital revolution and the transformation of journalism; Online journalism — history, characteristics, and Nigerian examples (including Neptune Prime as a case study); Careers in journalism and mass communication in Nigeria.
